Document Format Wars Get Dirty

Microsoft’s Office Open XML file format won approval from the Ecma International standards body in the last week of November 2006, giving it needed credibility as a rival to the OpenDocument format.

IBM was the lone dissenter in the vote on December 7 that approved Microsoft's Open XML document format as an Ecma standard.
